RGC 65–28 Newport

Saturday 10 October 2026

RGC delivered a statement performance at Stadiwm Eirias, overpowering league leaders Newport 65–28 in an entertaining display of attacking rugby. The Gogs played with intent from the opening minute, running in nine tries in front of a crowd of 921.

The home side made a positive start, but Newport threatened early when Will Ford intercepted the ball and sprinted downfield. RGC winger Ieuan Cornelius tracked him back before winning a crucial turnover to halt the attack.

Cornelius then made a break of his own, although his kick ahead went into touch as both sides looked to move the ball at pace.

Despite RGC’s positive start, Newport struck first through Joel Westwood, with Ford adding the conversion. The Gogs responded a minute later, Billy McBryde slotting a penalty to get the home side on the scoreboard.

As the game approached the 20-minute mark, the breakdown became increasingly competitive, with both sides battling for possession.

RGC soon found their breakthrough. Scrum-half Tudur Jones spotted a gap and released Danny Cross, who gathered the pass at pace before powering over the line. McBryde added the conversion to give the Gogs the lead.

The game continued to produce end-to-end rugby, with both sides creating opportunities through sharp breaks and determined defensive efforts.

RGC extended their advantage through a powerful driving maul. The pack made good ground before Osian Burt emerged with the ball to score. McBryde again delivered with a pinpoint conversion.

Newport looked to build pressure in the RGC half, but the home side repeatedly found a way out through clever kicking and effective counter-attacks. Celt Ffransis-Roberts carried strongly as RGC continued to look for opportunities to stretch the visitors’ defence.

Another McBryde kick towards the wing almost created a chance for Burt, who got a boot to the ball but was unable to gather it on the run.

RGC continued to build their lead when Sam Williams crossed for another try, maintaining his impressive scoring form. McBryde added the extras.

With half-time approaching, Newport responded through winger Finn Baker, with Ford converting. However, the visitors had little time to build on the score before RGC struck again.

Cornelius got his hands on the ball and dived over for a crucial try just before the break, restoring RGC’s momentum and giving the home side a 15-point advantage at half-time.

RGC began the second half as they had finished the first, playing on the front foot and moving the ball quickly.

The fourth try soon followed. Gareth Parry made a strong break before finding Tudur Jones on his shoulder. The scrum-half took the pass and crossed the line, with McBryde adding another conversion.

The Gogs were not finished there. A turnover from Jones beneath the RGC posts sparked another attack, as he kicked ahead and Sam Jones accelerated downfield, showing blistering pace to win the race to the ball and score.

With McBryde adding the conversion, RGC had opened up a commanding 43–14 lead.

Newport, unbeaten heading into the fixture, attempted to fight their way back into the contest. Ed Thompson crossed for a try, and Ford converted to reduce the deficit.

However, RGC continued to apply pressure in every area of the game, both with and without the ball. Jac Petch-Jones produced an important turnover following a break from Ford, underlining the defensive work rate that accompanied the home side’s attacking display.

Newport’s Thompson was shown a yellow card as the visitors struggled to contain RGC’s momentum. Cornelius also demonstrated his defensive awareness by covering and collecting a kick ahead deep inside the RGC half.

Newport added another try through Chay Foster-Smith, who showed his pace to race over, with Ford again converting.

RGC responded by continuing to exploit the space opening up in the Newport defence, with Niall Povall the next to get on the scoresheet.

The Gogs’ forward pack then provided another platform for a try, driving towards the line before Daf Thirsk emerged with the ball to score. McBryde added the conversion to take RGC beyond 60 points.

McBryde had the final say, adding another penalty to complete a memorable afternoon for the Gogs.

In front of 921 supporters at Stadiwm Eirias, RGC produced a powerful all-round performance, combining attacking ambition with commitment in defence to defeat the league leaders 65–28 and lay down an early-season marker.
