Aberavon: Preview as RGC head on the road
Abaravon awaits RGC this Saturday.
RGC Ready for Tough Away Run – Starting with Aberavon Test
RGC are gearing up for a challenging block of three consecutive away fixtures, beginning this weekend with a trip to face Aberavon at the Talbot Athletic Ground.
Form Guide
The Wizards have played five games so far this season, picking up two wins — against Newport at home and Bridgend away. However, they’ve suffered back-to-back defeats in recent weeks, losing to Bridgend at home and Cardiff away last weekend.
RGC’s form on the road has been mixed, with one win and one narrow defeat. The Gogs claimed victory at Pontypool earlier in the season before falling just short in a one-point loss to Llandovery two weeks ago.
With Aberavon sitting just one point and one place above RGC in the table, both sides will be determined to kickstart this next block of SRC fixtures. Following the trip to the Talbot Athletic Ground, RGC will continue their travels with visits to Carmarthen Quins and Bridgend.
Head-to-Head
RGC came out on top in the most recent meeting between the two sides, recording a thrilling 59–38 win in April. That day saw tries from Caio Parry, Pedr Jones (3), Billy McBryde (2), Gareth Parry (2), and Sam Williams.
Historically, home advantage has been key in this fixture. Aberavon have won all league games at home since 2018, when RGC secured a memorable 12–16 victory thanks to a try from Andrew Williams and the boot of Jacob Botica.
Ones to Watch – Aberavon Players
- Keillen Cullen (Fly-half) – A summer signing and record points scorer in BUCS Super Rugby, Cullen has already notched up 40 points this season. The former Hartpury University and Bonymaen player brings a strong kicking game and composure in attack.
- Freddie Chapman (Prop) – A powerful addition to the front row, joining from the Ospreys Academy after time with Saracens.
- Scott Delveno (Fullback) – A dangerous runner who topped the Wizards stat charts last season with 54 defenders beaten.
- Joe Gage (Captain, Centre) – A homegrown talent who came through the Ospreys age-grade system and represented Wales U20s alongside RGC’s Billy McBryde during their Grand Slam-winning campaign.
From the RGC Camp
Billy McBryde shared his thoughts ahead of the fixture:
“Aberavon will pose a huge challenge for us. We go into a block of three away games which will test us in a different way.
We know that the results haven’t been what we’d hoped, but our performances have been positive. We’re scoring 30+ points a game, which reflects the attacking style of rugby we play — but ultimately, we’re conceding too many.
The Talbot Athletic Ground is a notoriously difficult place to get a result, but we’ll go there well prepared and aiming for the win.
It’s a long season — it’s about learning quickly and moving on to the next game. The support, home and away, hasn’t gone unnoticed and we hope to repay those loyal fans by getting a result this weekend.”
