RGC claimed their first Super Rygbi Cymru win of the season with an entertaining 80 minutes at Stadiwm Eirias, overcoming Carmarthen Quins 36-29.

The visitors struck first, using their powerful driving maul from a lineout to crash over for the opening try, with Madoc Evans adding the conversion.

RGC were forced into an early change when Jac Williams went off injured, with Ieuan Cornelius coming on.

The Gogs soon found their rhythm, with Daf Thirsk and Sam Jones at the heart of a couple of promising attacks. RGC played with pace and purpose, and their pressure was eventually rewarded when Pedr Jones crossed for his first RGC try, with Billy McBryde adding the conversion.

RGC were beginning to create plenty of space. A break from Delwyn Jones on his 100th game, opened up the Quins defence, with Dion Jones and Danny Cross supporting before Sam Jones showed impressive pace and power but was unable to get over the whitewash.

The opportunities continued to come, but RGC were unable to turn their attacking pressure into points – something the visitors would have been pleased with as the half-hour approached.

Eventually, the second RGC score arrived when Dion Jones got his hands on the ball and raced under the posts. McBryde converted to put the Gogs ahead.

However, Carmarthen Quins showed their own clinical edge. After winger Callum Woolley made ground down the touchline, the visitors earned a penalty and kicked to the corner.

Once again, the lineout set up the driving maul, and the Quins pack powered over for their second try. Evans converted to level the scores at 14-14.

Two visits to the RGC try-line had produced two tries – highlighting the danger of conceding penalties in key areas.

As the half came to a close, RGC had one final opportunity when Ieuan Cornelius raced from coast to coast, kicked ahead and collected the ball, but was unable to stay in play with the try-line in sight.

Carmarthen Quins took the lead early in the second half when a crossfield kick created a two-on-one, allowing full-back Iori Badham to claim the touchdown.

Once again, RGC had been punished by a moment of decision-making, with the visitors finding a way to score from a relatively limited opportunity.

The game then entered a scrappy spell, with players from both sides squaring up as the intensity increased. The disruption slowed the pace of the match at a time when RGC needed to build momentum.

When the Gogs did manage to play with quick ball, scrum-half Tudur Jones was instrumental in setting up the backline, while Danny Cross continued to make inroads and looked dangerous with ball in hand.

McBryde then reduced the deficit to two points with a successful penalty.

From that moment, RGC began to take control.

Scrum-half Tudur Jones made the next break, creating space for the backs to attack, with Danny Cross taking the ball into contact before powering over the line.

The visitors were beginning to struggle whenever RGC lifted the tempo, as wave after wave of attacks forced the Quins defence into scramble mode.

Just a minute later, RGC secured their bonus point when Sam Jones, who had been lively throughout, burst through the defence and left defenders in his wake. McBryde added the conversion.

The scoreboard kept ticking over, and RGC then showed their strength up front as the driving maul powered towards the line, with Osian Burt emerging with the try.

It was a spell of rugby, in which took the game away from the visitors.

Carmarthen Quins refused to give up and responded with a try from Woolley, converted by Evans.

The RGC scrum was now turning the screw, repeatedly putting the Quins pack under pressure and drawing a huge response from the Stadiwm Eirias crowd.

Evans added a penalty on the final whistle to secure 2 bonus points for the visitors, but RGC had done enough to claim a hard-earned 36-29 victory.

Head Coach Jon Callard was pleased with the way his side responded after the break.

“I was really pleased with the endeavour of the boys and we managed the second half really well. To go 36-19 up is a credit to them. The positives were the scrum and our turnover ball. Eliminate the errors and we will be a very difficult side to play against.”
