Wizards Win

12 try Game, as Aberavon claim the win

Aberavon 45 – RGC 35

SRC Round 6 – Saturday 25th October 2025

As the clocks prepared to go back, RGC were hoping to turn back time themselves – looking for a first league win at the Talbot Athletic Ground since 2018.

It was a bright start on a blustery autumn afternoon, and the Gogs came flying out of the blocks. After just two minutes, Louis Williams and Dion Jones combined down the left, and it was full-back Jones who crossed the line. Billy McBryde added the extras to make it a perfect early harvest.

The tempo stayed high – Caio Parry chased a kick ahead that bounced just into touch, the crisp conditions making for lively handling.

After five minutes, the home side began to get a foothold in the game, crossing the whitewash after a clever cross-field kick from Keilen Curran found centre Brad Roderick, who touched down to level the score.

Barely a minute later, RGC hit back in lightning fashion – turning defence into attack as McBryde gathered near halfway and sprinted the length of the field to score under the posts, before converting his own try.

Aberavon’s pack began to rumble as they tried to settle into the rhythm of the game. A series of scrums led to a penalty try, and the Wizards were right back in it.

The Gogs kept their work rate high – Delwyn Jones and McBryde chased loose kicks downfield, forcing the home side back into their own 22. Both sides were scrapping for possession around the pitch.

RGC came close again through a strong attacking maul, but a crucial knock-on denied them at the line. A McBryde penalty attempt drifted just short.

The visitors extended their lead when Louis Williams gathered his own kick to score, with McBryde once more on target. RGC were nine points up and looking sharp as the shadows lengthened.

But just as the evenings draw in early, so too did Aberavon close the gap. Two quick tries before half-time – from Gwilyn Evans and then Frankie Jones – turned the game on its head. Cullen converted both, and the Wizards led 26–12 at the break.

RGC started the second half brightly, with McBryde slicing through for his second of the game, adding the extras to bring the visitors back in front by two. Dion Jones continued to make yards, breaking through fallen tackles.

The next turning point came when Aberavon winger Cory Lewis-Jenkins chased his own kick to score and restore a ten-point cushion.

Both sides looked to stretch the field with kicks and counter-kicks – a real back-and-forth affair, as unpredictable as an autumn gusts.

RGC weren’t done yet. Gareth Parry gathered and offloaded to Tudur Parry, who ran in for another Gog try. McBryde’s conversion made it a three-point game with minutes remaining.

But as the clocks prepared to fall back, RGC’s luck did too. From the restart, they couldn’t secure possession, and Aberavon camped in the visitors’ half. In the final minute, fly-half Cullen kicked over the top, gathered the bounce under the posts, and sealed the game; his conversion put daylight between his side and RGC.
