Jones Returns: Sam Signs Up
Sam Jones returns to RGC
RGC are pleased to confirm that Sam Jones has returned to Stadiwm Eirias.
An RGC Academy graduate, Jones made 63 appearances between 2015 and 2019. He made his senior debut away to Newbridge on 5 September 2015, a match RGC won 32–7, and his final appearance in his first spell came in another emphatic victory — a 63–24 win over Cardiff on 18 May 2019, in which he crossed for a try.
One of his most memorable moments came in 2017, when he scored the last-play try against Merthyr in the Cup semi-final, a decisive contribution that helped RGC go on to lift the trophy.
Since leaving, Jones has represented Merthyr, Brecon, and Pontypool, gaining valuable experience across the Welsh club game. His return marks a homecoming for a player who has been part of RGC’s journey from its early Championship seasons.
Performance Manager Josh Leach welcomed the news, saying:
"It’s great to have Sam back at RGC. He’s come through our pathway, was a key part of the National Cup-winning squad, and understands what it means to represent our region.
He has gained a lot of National League experience since he moved away, and has proven himself to be a natural try scorer year on year."
Jones said he was looking forward to pulling on the RGC shirt once again:
"After more than six years away, it feels great to be back at RGC. It’s a great group of lads, and there’s a real togetherness around the squad which makes it easy to settle back in. I’m looking forward to getting out there again and playing the RGC way, contributing wherever I can, and enjoying being back in the RGC environment. Once a Gog, always a Gog."
RGC General Manager Alun Pritchard: "We’re delighted to have Sam return to RGC. He’s got a lot of history with the club following ‘that try’ in the cup semi-final against Merthyr many years ago, and I hope he can bring the same sparkle with him as he returns home! It’s a big commitment for him to travel from the southernmost point of our rugby region for training and home games, which says a lot about his will and determination to play for us."
We would like to thank Pontypool for supporting Sam in his move back north.
Welcome back, Sam.
RGC play Swansea at Stadiwm Eirias on Saturday, 2.30pm.
